Working in Sandy
What we see in Sandy yards
Sandy is our home base, so these are the yards we know best. On the west side, Historic Sandy and the streets near State Street have older homes on flatter lots. Heading east past 1300 East, neighborhoods like Pepperwood, Alta Canyon, Willow Creek, and the homes around Dimple Dell climb toward the foothills of the Wasatch.
Those east-side lots bring slopes, and slopes change how a sprinkler system should run. Water applied too fast runs off the high side of the yard and pools at the bottom, leaving the top brown and the bottom spongy. We split hillside lawns into separate zones, use low-flow rotary nozzles, and add check valves so lines stop draining out through the lowest head after each cycle.
The ground near the foothills is rocky, a reminder of old canyon runoff and lakeshore deposits. Digging a new line or relocating a head often means working around cobble, and the soil holds less moisture than it does on the valley floor. Around Dimple Dell, natural ravines and native brush border many backyards, so we're careful to keep spray and runoff out of the slopes.
Winter shows up early on Sandy's east bench. Storms drop off the canyons and can stick on shaded, north-facing driveways for days. That is why our snow crews start on the higher streets first. In the fall, we time blowouts and leaf cleanups so foothill yards are ready before that first storm arrives.
